USA- Regions- About American Culture

Spring is a time of new beginnings and we are very excited to have many new students arriving to the United States this spring. While American culture is very complex and varies largely by region, we wanted to provide you with a few tips as you begin your time in your host country.

1) Americans are very punctual. It is considered rude to be late to an appointment or other scheduled events. You should always be on time and it is fair to expect others to be on time as well.

2) Most Americans tend to seem very direct and less socially inhibited compared to people from some other cultures. Americans value honesty. If your boss tells you that you did something wrong, it is more likely that they are trying to help you than embarrass or hurt you.

3) Americans love individuality and most embrace their differences with others and are eager to learn from them. We encourage you to share your culture with the people that you meet and also to feel comfortable asking them questions about themselves and American culture

4) Just like people in your home country, Americans love to have fun! There are many different ways that Americans have fun- playing sports, listening to music, dining with friends, etc. During your time here, try some new activities that you have never participated in before.
