USA Culture 6- via BRGwork

The US is made up of six main regions: New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest, and the West. Over the next few months, we are going to focus on a region and share some of its unique attributes.

In addition to the 48 states that make up the U.S. mainland, there are two addition states that don’t fall into the six regions above: Alaska and Hawaii.

Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area. It is located 500 miles north of Washington state on the Pacific coast with Canada to the east, the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west and south. Despite its large geographical size, Alaska is the least densely populated state of the U.S. Alaska is well known for its subartic climate and its expansive areas of wilderness that include more than 3 million lakes, 29 volcanos, 34,000 miles of ocean shoreline, and Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain peak in North America. While Alaska’s capital is Juneau, over 40% of the state’s residents live in it Anchorage, the state’s largest city.

Hawaii is the newest of the 50 states and is the only state to be made up entirely of islands. Hawaii is located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 200 miles southwest of the U.S. mainland. Hawaii is a very popular destination for tourists because of its tropical climate, beautiful scenery, and unique culture that mixes North American, Asian, and native elements. The entire chain of islands was created by volcanic activity and many active volcanoes can still be seen on the largest islands southern coast. The capital of Hawaii is Honolulu, located on the island of O’ahu.

Alaska and Hawaii are about as different as two states can get, but they are both a part of what makes the United States such a unique and wonderful place to live and visit.
