US Culture 5- via BRGwork

The US is made up of six main regions: New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest, and the West. Over the next few months, we are going to focus on a region and share some of its unique attributes.

The Southwest is a region covers the southwestern portion of the United States and consists of five states: Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. The terrain of the Southwest includes mountains, mesas, high broad basins, plateaus, desert lands, and some plains. The climate is considered semi-desert to desert.

The region is well known for its abundance of national parks and monuments; two of the best known are Grand Canyon National Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. People often travel to this region to explore the great outdoors. In addition to the region’s natural assets, it is home to some of the counties largest metropolitan areas including Denver, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. Due to the region’s Spanish and Mexican influenced history and large Hispanic population, the food in the region is sometimes likened to Mexican given its usage of similar spices, chili peppers, and beans. The Southwest is a wonderful place to visit during your time in the U.S. Between the city lights of Las Vegas, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and the deserts in Arizona, there is something for everyone!
