The US is made up of six main regions: New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest, and the West. Over the next few months, we are going to focus on a region and share some of its unique attributes.
New England is a region in the Northeast corner of the United States which consists of six states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. This region was only of the earliest settled areas in North America and is home to many of the early American education, philosophy, and literature movements. New England is comparable in size to the island of Great Britain and features hundreds of miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline, the Appalachian Mountains, and an abundance of lush forests, rolling hills, and lakes.
The region’s biggest city and cultural capital is Boston, Massachusetts. The culture in New England is unique and borrows heavily from English and European cultures. Accordingly, there are many different accents from the region, but the Boston accent is most familiar in popular culture. New England also has a very diverse economy, but many Americans identify the region for its food exports: seafood, cranberries, and maple syrup. In addition, New England is known for its abundance of high quality universities. The region boasts four of the eight Ivy League schools: Harvard, Yale, Brown, and Dartmouth Universities.
